Yuwei Peng

I lead the Database Systems Group at the Luojia TOTEM Database Laboratory, Wuhan University. I am an Associate Professor and Ph.D. supervisor in the School of Computer Science, Deputy Head of the Department of Computer Science, and Head of the Database Teaching Group.

My teaching and research focus on database systems and big data. I have led projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and subprojects of the National 863 Program, and participated in the National Key R&D Program, the 863 Program, and NSFC key projects. As technical lead, I led the development of TOTEM, an object-deputy data management system developed in China. My work has received first- and second-class Science and Technology Progress Awards from the Ministry of Education. I have published dozens of papers in academic journals and international conferences.

I have collaborated on database kernel development with Kingbase, Huawei, Alibaba Cloud, Ant Group, Ping An Technology, and Beijing Xuji Electric. My books include OceanBase Database Source Code Analysis and PostgreSQL Database Internals. My Chinese translations include Mastering PostgreSQL 11, Mastering PostgreSQL 9.6, PostgreSQL 9.6 High Performance, and the PostgreSQL and Greenplum documentation.

My current interests include database systems (AI4DB, query optimization, cloud-native databases, and spatiotemporal data management), big data for traditional culture (including genealogies and local gazetteers), and digital watermarking for geographic data, databases, and text.

Prospective students

For the 2026 intake, I am primarily recruiting master’s students in database systems, for both academic and professional degrees. Experience with database kernel projects or competitions is especially welcome, as is an AI background combined with an interest in databases. Please contact me if you would like to join our group.
